Brighton Festival 2012: Top five free events

This year’s Brighton Festival is shaping up to be one of the best, and better still, there’s plenty of things to see for free. We’ve picked out five of our favourite free events, and you can find even more on the Brighton Festivalwebsite.

Children’s Parade
It simply wouldn’t be Brighton Festival without the Children’s Parade to get things going. Led by this year’s Guest Director Vanessa Redgrave, the procession brings together 5,000 youngsters from across the city to explore the ‘story of stories’. Expect colour, costume and live music as the parade makes its way through the city centre to Madeira Drive.
Date: 5 May
Time: 10.30am
Venue: Starts at Sydney Street, Brighton

Sea of Voices
This commissioned project by Invisible Flock is billed as a ‘guided audio-visual encounter’. Inspired by our relationships with the sea, Sea of Voices looks at the imagery, history and mythology of our coast. Using Brighton’s unique seascape we are invited to embark on this interactive and thought provoking experience.
Date: 5 May – 27 May
Time: 12noon – 7pm
Venue: Various between Fabrica and the Marina
For more information, visit the Brighton Festival website.
The Otolith Group
The Turner-prize nominated artists have created a new film commissioned for the Brighton Festival, which follows on from last year’s Hydra Decapita. It is the second part of a projected trilogy of films looking at the relationship between finance capitalism and the slave trade.
Date: 5 – 27 May
Time: 12noon – 7pm (Late nights 5 and 26 May until 11)
Venue: Fabrica
For more information, visit the Brighton Festival website.
Trolleys
If you’re looking for something a bit different then this may well be it. Trolleys is billed as a “high-octane, highly physical and humorous outdoor performance – on wheels”. A mixture of acrobatics, ballet, street dance and electro-acoustic music, it follows the trolley’s emotional tales of love, friendship and anarchy. Intriguing.
Date: 19 May
Time: 2pm and 3.15pm
Venue: Marina Square, Brighton Marina
For more information, visit the Brighton Festival website.
The Boat Project – Maiden Voyage
This is the maiden voyage of the boat created from last year’s donations of wooden objects which had memories attached to them. Guitars, hockey sticks, rolling pins and even coat hangers are just some of the objects that have been crafted into a sea-worthy vessel. There will be several events activities taking place to celebrate the launch of the vessel but the maiden voyage from Chichester to Brighton will give people their first look at this fascinating creation.
Date: 19 May
Time: 1pm
Venue: Brighton Marina
